Perth forward Murray Couper’s career return of 459 goals for the Demons doesn’t put him anywhere near the top of the all time WAFL goalkicking list. However, he will be remembered as one of the most mercurial, flamboyant, and on his day unstoppable forwards to grace the local scene. He was also one of the best and accurate kicks for goal to play the game.Couper had a late start to his league career, due in part to an apparent reluctance of coach Malcolm Atwell to give him a berth in the team.  The advent of Ken Armstrong was the spark that ignited Couper.  He made his league debut at the age of 23, and was to play 134 games for Perth between 1971 and 1980, in what was a sometimes fiery and controversial career.  Couper was such a long and accurate kick that he spent a lot of his time on the half forward line. Not big for a key forward, he was a high leaping aerialist who strayed all over the attacking zone, making him a hard player to match up on.   Topping Perth’s goalkicking list three times, he also led the League in 1975, helped considerably by a thirteen goal game against the Bulldogs. He was a strong spearhead in the Demons back to back premierships in 1976 and 77, with grand final tallies of four and six respectively.Murray Couper got the wanderlust after a successful career with Perth, crossing the river to East Perth in 1980, where he kicked 45 goals, then traversing the Stirling Highway to Moss Street in 1981, where he pulled on the blue and white for a single appearance.Couper has continued his association with the game since retiring, mentoring and coaching young players, and is sought after as a coach of the art of kicking, which was his forte’ when he graced the field.
